Odessa National Medical University

Odessa National Medical University (ONMU) stands as the largest medical university in Ukraine and holds the distinction of being one of the oldest in Eastern and Western Europe. Its roots trace back to September 1, 1900, when a medical college was established in Odessa under the auspices of the renowned Russian Imperial University, Novorossysk University.

During this time, eminent scientists were engaged with Novorossysk University, focusing notably on the development of the medical school in Odessa. Prior to the establishment of the medical college, new buildings were constructed to house classrooms and clinics, designed by prominent architects of the Russian Empire.

The scientists and educators at Odessa’s medical college played a pivotal role in advancing medical knowledge, contributing significantly to the standards of healthcare in Ukraine and Russia. In 1922, the medical college of Novorossysk University in Odessa underwent restructuring, attaining the status of a higher medical institution and was renamed as the “Odessa Medical Institute.”

Following Ukraine’s independence in 1993, Odessa Medical Institute achieved the highest fourth level of certification and was redesignated as “Odessa State Medical University.” In 1997, it was further elevated to national status and became known as “Odessa National Medical University.”

ONMU was the first among medical universities in Ukraine to attain national status, signifying its prestigious position in the field of medical education. It offers comprehensive programs in medicine, dentistry, pediatrics, pharmacy, nursing, postgraduate education, and clinical residency programs. Today, ONMU maintains its status as a leading medical institution in Ukraine, holding membership in the International Association of Medical Universities and enjoying recognition for its high standards of training across Europe and America.

Undergraduate Studies At

Odessa National Medical University

The undergraduate medical course typically lasts for six years and is taught in English, Russian, or French. Students opting for the Russian medium must complete a one-year Russian language course in addition to the six-year program. Upon completion of the six-year UG course, students are awarded an “MD Physician” degree, which is equivalent to M.B.B.S in India.

ONMU offers more courses in English medium compared to most other universities in Ukraine. Apart from undergraduate degrees in Medicine and Dentistry, ONMU also provides several specializations for post-graduate medical education.

Syllabus and Examination At

Odessa National Medical University

The curriculum adheres to the updated syllabus introduced in the academic year 1996/1997. The week consists of 5 working days, with Saturday and Sunday designated as days off. Study sessions are scheduled from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A student’s weekly workload totals 54 hours, comprising 36 hours of lectures and 18 hours of self-directed study.

The examination results are assessed from 5 to 1 (5 is “excellent”, 4 is “good”, 3 is “satisfactory”, and 2 is “unsatisfactory”). The final state examinations on all disciplines according to the syllabus are held within on system through 2 stages:

  • Testing practical proficiency (when exams on clinical disciplines are taken, testing takes place at the patient’s bedside).
  • Testing scientific-theoretical proficiency.
