Vinnitsa National Medical University

Vinnitsa National Medical University, established in 1921, was renamed M.I. Pirogov in 1960 and honored with the Order of Honor in 1984. Since 1994, it has been certified as a level IV institution and obtained university status. In 2002, it attained national recognition and received diplomas from both the Cabinet of Ministers and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The university boasts a distinguished academic faculty, with nearly one-sixth holding the prestigious titles of Doctor of Sciences or Professor. A total of 126 Doctors of Sciences and 677 Candidates of Sciences contribute to student education.

The institution is home to 25 Honored Scientists and Technicians of Ukraine, as well as recipients of various national awards, including 3 Academicians of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 12 Honored Doctors of Ukraine, and 5 State Prize winners.

Furthermore, the university is committed to integrating computer technologies into its academic and administrative processes. It offers free access to 26 computer categories and 4 channels of the Internet network for students, postgraduate students, and teachers.

It hosts 12 scientific schools and fosters artistic collaborations while maintaining partnerships with medical faculties in 19 foreign countries, including the USA, Germany, France, England, and Russia. Additionally, it has strong ties with clinical departments in 28 foreign pharmaceutical companies.

Faculty members are actively involved in 62 international projects.

Vasil Maksimovich Moroz, the university chancellor, holds a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree, is a Professor, and a Full Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. He also serves as the Head of the Association of the Rectors of the Medical Universities of Ukraine and is a Hero of Ukraine and an Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine. He is also a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology.

Vinnitsa National Medical University

Dear students and future colleagues!

For the past 90 years, VNMU has trained over 44 thousand doctors and specialists who have gone on to meet the health care needs of the citizens of Ukraine, as well as over 6.5 thousand doctors who have gone on to work in 106 countries of Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America, and Europe. Our graduates provide medical care, render medical aid to the population of their countries and abroad, work in institutions of higher education, and head many state and private medical establishments.

VNMU is a multi-profile center that emphasizes training, specialization, and improvement of its medical, scientific-pedagogical staff and conducts significant scientific-methodical, experimental work, representing all branches of medicine.

VNMU continues to build new facilities, expand its faculties, and modernize its education program.

VNMU is known nationally and internationally for its high quality of specialist training and was rated by the International Personnel Academy ranking of schools of higher education as one of the best institutions in Ukraine in 1995, 1997, and 2000. For 1997 and 2000, VNMU was determined to be among the best educational medical establishments and was awarded with a special Diploma.

These efforts were recognized by the President of Ukraine, the Supreme Council of Ukraine, the Minister of Education and Science, Public Health, the President of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, deputies of Vinnytsya region, the head of Vinnytsya Regional State Administration, Vinnytsya city mayors, representatives of many educational institutions of Ukraine and foreign countries.

Foreign graduates recommended themselves by the high quality of training at VNMU, which trains them more than 50 years. Today, at the University study almost 1500 foreign citizens from 63 countries (Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, Latin America and CIS). Each year the University receives more than 20-25 delegations from embassies, representative offices, foreign firms for scientific cooperation and organization of training of foreign nationals.

Each year 15-20 scientific conferences, congresses, and symposia are held at the university, which testify to the high prestige of the university, and its staff’s significant contribution to the development of education and science. In 2010, dedicated to the 200th birth anniversary of M.Pirogov held V International Congress «Pirogov’s readings» in the framework of which also was the XXII Congress of Surgeons of Ukraine, within 5 days 2173 delegates from 28 countries took part in the congress. In 2012 university staff was awarded — «Leader of the National Ranking Assessment of higher educational institutions in Ukraine» and the Gold Prize «Recognition of the Year — 2012» for the development of international cooperation.>

The university has one of the highest educational institutions in Ukraine sufficient level of teachers with academic degrees and titles. Every sixth teacher — Doctor of Science, Professor. As of 01.01.2013, the University staff is 1646. The teaching staff consists of — 812 persons, among them 120 doctors of science including 75 professors, 17 academicians, and 5 members-correspondents of Academies of Science, 4 Honoured Workers of Higher School and Education of Ukraine, 559 candidates of science including 283 associate professors, 12 Honoured Physicians of Ukraine, teachers with no degree — 138. Seven lecturers were given honorary titles of the Honoured Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine, and many of its research workers are laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine and 1 laureate of the State Prize of Belarus.

The University has been developed dynamically, over the past 15 years, were organized faculties of dentistry and pharmacy, began training in five new specialties, opened part-time (by correspondence) training in pharmacy, organized a department of internal and family medicine for major faculties and the Faculty of postgraduate training, which operates on the basis of medical institutions in Khmelnytskyi. Improving physicians on family medicine is a significant contribution of the university staff to the implementation of modern concept of the system of public health services in Ukraine.

The university has perfect material-technical and methodological bases, were created the following centers — new information technologies, scientific-research, diagnostic, medical psychological advisory center, educational and scientific-industrial complex — the institution of rehabilitation of disabled persons, educational-industrial complex — dental clinic. They are equipped with modern facilities, which contributes to a combination of educational process and rendering of medical aid.

We built a new education building where placed four departments and laboratories of research center. At present a modern library with bookdepository for 500,000 books is in the process of construction.

We carry out a program of significant reconstruction of students dormitories on creation in them hotel like rooms. For the nearest future our plans are to open university students polyclinic and drugstore. All these transformations are realized with funds earned by university employees providing educational and other services.

Computer technologies are widely used in the training process and management of the University. Operates 32 computer classrooms, using 4 Internet channels, with free access for students, postgraduate students and teachers.

University staff takes an active part in the development of a fundamental reform of higher medical education and social protection of students, teachers, high school pensioners, protection of training databases for medical education.

Among our foreign graduates: the head of the military hospital in Panama, Deputy Minister of Health of Angola, trusted doctor of the President of Syria, the head of large cardiology clinic in Chicago. The majority of foreign graduates praiseworthy represent our university in 106 countries.

The University maintains close relations and cooperate with medical faculties of 19 foreign countries (including the U.S., Germany, France, England, Russia, etc.), clinical departments have close ties with 28 foreign pharmaceutical firms. Departments’ teaching staff involved in the implementation of 72 international projects.

Our university is rich in traditions, among them:

  • Deep respect for student personality;
  • Administration’s democracy with students at all levels;
  • high demands for knowledge’ mastering;
  • strict compliance with the statute, regarding educational discipline and behavior in higher schools.

University promotes creative abilities of students, creates conditions for their harmonious development. Every year organized more than 12-16 exhibitions of student amateur painters.

In Ukraine, well known artistic achievements of university folk collectives – folk choir «Nadbuzhanka», dance ensemble «Druzhba», vocal band «Vizerunky». The university graduates are: Mykola Bilkun — Ukrainian humorist, Victoria Petrushenko – singer, People’s Artist of Ukraine, professor of surgery department № 1. At the university’s library in literary association more than 30 students and staff members.

Our students represent university in city’s, regional, national and international sports contests.

Vinnitsa National Medical University

The institute comprises 38 faculty departments, including 23 clinical and 15 theoretical departments. Among them, there are 5 fundamental-profile, 4 humanitarian and socio-economic profile, and 31 professionally-oriented departments. The faculty consists of 469 teachers, of whom 336 (71.6%) hold degrees, including 67 doctors (14.3%) and 269 candidates (57.4%). Notable figures within the institute include Professor O. Gnatyuk, recipient of the State Prize of Ukraine, and Assoc. VN Olhov, honored with the title of Honored Worker of Science of Ukraine and the Hero of Ukraine.

The esteemed leadership of the institute includes Rector Prof. V.N. Frost, honored with the title of Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, and Prof. G.K. Paly, who is an Academician of the Higher School of Ukraine. Furthermore, there are 4 Honored Scientists of Ukraine, individuals honored with the title of Honored Inventor and Innovator of Ukraine, 2 Honored Workers of Education of Ukraine, 16 members of international, foreign, and alternative academies, and 8 distinguished doctors of Ukraine associated with the institute.

Noteworthy is the fact that almost all departments of the medical faculty №1 are headed by individuals with doctoral degrees. Furthermore, in eleven departments, every teacher holds a degree, while in twelve departments, there are 2-3 individuals with doctorates. This highly qualified faculty plays a crucial role in integrating new medical technologies and techniques into both the educational process and practical training. In the academic year 2005/2006, the institute introduced a credit-modular form of training for students, necessitating significant organizational and educational support from the management departments.

The faculty members are actively engaged in the development and publication of textbooks and teaching materials. These resources, authored by professors and associate faculty such as O.I. Gnatyuk, B.F. Mazorchuk, P.P. Shaparenko, and others, are being published by various reputable publishing houses.

Furthermore, teachers from multiple departments are collaborating on crafting curriculum and designing tests that align with medical licensing examinations such as “Krok-1” and “Krok-2”.

The educational infrastructure is modernized, with computerized systems in place for managing teaching materials and utilizing state-of-the-art medical equipment for both training and diagnostic purposes.

Faculty members are also actively participating in the implementation of five public health programs. These programs include initiatives targeting HIV prevention and care, oncology, hypertension prevention and treatment, diabetes management, and tuberculosis control.

Moreover, the faculty operates five specialized centers certified for improving the quality of health across all demographics. These centers address medical and social issues related to demographic challenges and provide accessible family medicine services, including methods for early disease detection, to cater to the needs of the entire population.

The Faculty of Medicine enrolled a total of 2,712 students, comprising 1,432 individuals on state-sponsored training and 1,280 on contract training.

The faculty encompasses departments of basic disciplines and theoretical studies, situated in both the morphological building and educational building №2. These facilities boast modern equipment and specialized centers.

The hospital outpatient department, where students undergo practical training, is designed to accommodate 3,460 visits daily.

Acknowledging the significant contribution to teaching in general surgery, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has endorsed the faculty as a reference for relevant medical university departments.

In shaping scientific and methodological support and vocational training, input from sociological studies, including surveys of students and healthcare managers, is considered. The faculty has established a robust monitoring system for assessing departmental educational activities and ensuring the quality of material comprehension. Various levels of assessment, including base, ongoing, and final evaluations, are facilitated through comprehensive packages tailored to different stages of student learning across semesters.

Clinical department instructors engage in medical and advisory roles within pivotal hospital departments, adopting and implementing cutting-edge treatment and diagnostic methodologies. They also conduct intricate surgical procedures, contributing to advancements in medical practice.
